OUR HISTORY
The Origin of LGBT Equality Alliance of Chester County
In January 2015, Rachel Stevenson, founding president of what would become the LGBT Equality Alliance of Chester County* reignited the LGBTQ+ social scene in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Inspired by the vibrant community that once gathered at the beloved gay bar Frank Jeffreys (2001–2009), Stevenson launched the first monthly LGBTea Dance on January 11, 2015. These inclusive afternoon gatherings quickly became a safe and joyful space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies across Chester County and the greater Philadelphia suburbs.
From Tea Dances to Community Impact
What began as a monthly social event soon evolved into something much greater. Within just three months, it became clear that the LGBTQ+ community in Chester County needed more than connection—they needed support, services, and advocacy. Fueled by the overwhelming success and community response, the nonprofit organization LGBTea Dances was officially founded in March 2015 as a registered 501(c)(3).
A New Name, A Broader Mission
By July 2016, the organization had grown beyond its original vision. To reflect its expanding role in health, education, advocacy, outreach, and community partnerships, the nonprofit rebranded as the LGBT Equality Alliance of Chester County. Today, it stands as the leading LGBTQ+ nonprofit in the western Philadelphia suburbs, committed to creating a more inclusive, equitable, and empowered future for all.
